Wood vs Plastic CratesMay 28, 2013 ,
When it comes time to decide on which type of crate to use to ship something, some people automatically reach for wooden crates, while others go for plastic ones. The wood versus plastic debate has been going on for a while, and there is seemingly no end in sight, as both types have their pros and cons, not to mention their promoters and detractors.
The best way to choose which type of crate is best depends on many factors, including the items being shipped and the methods needed in order to pack them securely. Once a main packing method has been developed, it is time to weigh the pros and cons of wood and plastic crates to choose which one to use:
Wooden crates are more eco friendly, as they can be reused again and again. If a section of them begins to break down over time, they can be taken apart and the still-usable components can be used in the newly built crate. Also, if you need a custom crate for any reason, it is far easier (and quicker) to make one out of wood than it is to mold one out of plastic. However, wooden crates are heavier and can be more fragile than their plastic counterparts.
Plastic crates are much less flexible size-wise. If you need a custom crate, it is easier to make one out of wood. However, plastic crates are sturdy and reusable, as long the contents and any packaging materials fit into one of the already-existing sized crates. Plastic crates are also lighter and easier to move around, which makes them a better choice for lighter and less-fragile items. However, once a plastic crate gets worn down due to use, it cannot simply be disassembled like a wooden crate. It can be recycled, but not broken down and re-built.
